COUPLES THERAPY IN THE WOODLANDS

You can love each other and still not know how to fix what keeps happening between you.

Maybe you keep having the same argument, only with different words without any real resolution. One of you tries to talk while the other shuts down and leaves the conversation. Small things turn into big things. Resentment has started building. Trust has been hurt. Or maybe there isn’t constant conflict at all because all attempts of reconnecting haven’t worked and both of you have stopped trying.

You may both know something needs to change, but every attempt to make it better seems to lead you right back to the same place.

Couples therapy can give you somewhere to slow the pattern down, understand what’s actually happening between you, and start doing something different.

IT’S EASY TO GET STUCK IN THE SAME PATTERN

Most couples don’t realize they’re falling into a pattern while it’s happening. Over time, the way you respond to each other can become almost automatic, and before long, both of you may find yourselves reacting in ways that only make things worse.

One person may push harder to talk because they want the issue resolved, while the other pulls away because the conversation feels overwhelming or like it’s going nowhere. The more one pushes, the more the other withdraws. Eventually, both people walk away feeling unheard, frustrated, or misunderstood.

Other couples get stuck in different patterns. You may avoid difficult conversations to keep the peace, let resentment build until something small sets off a much bigger argument, struggle to rebuild trust after being hurt, or realize that work, kids, responsibilities, and everyday life have slowly taken priority over your relationship.

In couples therapy, we’re not just going to talk about who said what during the last argument. We’ll look at what keeps happening between you, what each of you brings into that pattern, and what needs to change for the relationship to feel different.

COUPLES THERAPY ISN’T ABOUT DECIDING WHO’S RIGHT

When couples come into my office, both people usually have a pretty good idea of what they think the other person is doing wrong. That’s understandable. By the time you’ve decided to try therapy, you’ve probably had some version of the same conversation more times than you can count.

My job isn’t to choose sides or decide which one of you is the problem. I’m going to help both of you slow things down enough to understand what’s happening underneath the arguments, the defensiveness, the shutting down, or the distance that has developed between you.

We’ll pay attention to how you communicate, but we’ll also look beyond communication skills. The experiences, expectations, beliefs, hurts, and patterns each of you brings into the relationship matter too. Sometimes what looks like an argument about dishes, money, sex, parenting, or whose turn it was to do something isn’t really just about that.

I won’t expect you to come in knowing how to fix your relationship. That’s why you’re coming to therapy. What I will ask is that both of you be willing to look at your part, be honest about what’s happening, and work toward doing something differently.

WHAT BRINGS COUPLES TO THERAPY?

Couples come to therapy for all kinds of reasons. Sometimes there has been a specific hurt or change in the relationship, and other times it’s harder to pinpoint exactly when things started feeling different.

Couples often reach out when they’re dealing with:

  • The same arguments that never seem to get resolved
  • Communication that quickly turns into defensiveness or shutting down
  • Feeling unheard, misunderstood, or unappreciated
  • Emotional distance or feeling more like roommates than partners
  • Hurt or resentment that has built up over time

Therapy can also help when you’re facing:

  • Broken trust or trying to rebuild after a painful experience
  • Differences around parenting, money, sex, or other important parts of the relationship
  • A major life change that has affected your connection
  • Difficulty balancing work, family, responsibilities, and your relationship
  • A desire to strengthen the relationship before things get worse

WHAT YOU CAN EXPECT FROM ME

I genuinely enjoy working with couples, especially when both people are willing to show up, be honest about what’s happening, and take a look at their own part in the relationship. You don’t have to agree on everything, and you certainly don’t have to have it all figured out before you walk through my door.

After more than 25 years as a therapist, I’ve learned that the argument a couple brings into my office is rarely the whole story. I’m listening for what’s underneath it, including the patterns you’ve fallen into, the assumptions you’re making about each other, the experiences you each bring into the relationship, and the things that may have gone unsaid for a long time.

My style is warm and down-to-earth, but I’m also willing to be direct when it’s helpful. I’m not going to sit quietly while the two of you have the same argument in my office that you had in the car on the way over. We’ll slow it down, figure out what’s actually happening, and work on changing the way you respond to each other.

The goal isn’t to decide who’s right. It’s to help both of you understand what keeps getting in the way of the relationship you want to have.

We all come into relationships with our own stuff.

WE ALL BRING BAGGAGE INTO OUR RELATIONSHIPS

Something I often tell couples is that we all bring baggage into our relationships. We each have a history, insecurities, hurts, habits, triggers, and parts of ourselves that still need some work. Your partner has them, and so do you. That’s part of being human.

A healthy relationship isn’t one where neither person has issues. It’s one where two people learn how to help each other carry what they bring with them instead of using it to hurt each other.

That doesn’t mean your partner becomes responsible for fixing your struggles, or that you have to tolerate behavior that is harmful to you. It means learning to understand each other well enough that the things each of you carries don’t keep getting in the way of the relationship you want to have.

The goal isn’t to get rid of every issue either of you brings into the relationship. It’s learning how to face those issues together instead of letting them pull you apart.

YOU DON’T HAVE TO WAIT UNTIL THINGS ARE FALLING APART

Couples therapy isn’t only for relationships in crisis. Sometimes the best time to ask for help is when you both know something isn’t working and you’re tired of trying to solve it the same way.

If you’re ready to understand what’s been happening between you and begin working toward something different, I’d be glad to talk with you about whether couples therapy at ESSENTIALS is a good fit.
